VSAN
Definition
VSAN means virtual storage area network, but the term has two important uses. In Fibre Channel networking, it describes a logical storage fabric separated from other fabrics on shared equipment. In software-defined storage, a virtual SAN can combine storage resources into a shared service; VMware vSAN is a specific product in that area. Always establish which meaning a discussion intends.
What it means
A storage area network connects servers to storage. Virtualization changes how that infrastructure is organized or presented, but different technologies virtualize different things.
A Fibre Channel VSAN separates storage-network communication into logical fabrics. Storage pooling software instead combines capacity and manages access to stored data. The two ideas are related to storage infrastructure, yet they are not interchangeable. Buying a product that pools disks does not simply create a Cisco-style logical Fibre Channel fabric, and creating such a fabric does not automatically pool disk capacity.
How it works
In the Fibre Channel meaning, administrators assign connections to logical fabrics and configure their allowed paths. Each VSAN has its own fabric services, including zoning. Compatible links may transport multiple VSANs while keeping their traffic logically separated.
In the storage-pooling meaning, software coordinates devices across a cluster and presents shared storage to workloads. Placement and protection policies determine how data uses the available resources. Networking carries communication between participating machines.
Both approaches depend on physical equipment. Logical separation does not remove a shared switch's failure risk, and a pool's raw capacity is not necessarily its usable capacity. Protection overhead, maintenance reserves, hardware compatibility, and workload demand still matter.
Three practical examples
1. Development separation: An organization places test servers and test storage connections in a different Fibre Channel VSAN from production, alongside appropriate zoning and storage permissions.
2. Virtual-machine storage: A team uses a software-defined storage platform to provide shared storage for several hosts, selecting protection policies suited to its workload and failure assumptions.
3. AI infrastructure planning: Engineers distinguish the network carrying training-data traffic from the system storing that data. This prevents a proposal for logical network separation from being mistaken for an increase in storage capacity.
Think of it this way
Think of two changes to a warehouse. One creates separate authorized delivery routes through the building. The other combines several stockrooms into one managed inventory service.
Both involve the warehouse, but they solve different problems. The first resembles fabric separation, while the second resembles storage pooling. The analogy stops before technical details: real storage systems have protocols, consistency rules, and failure behavior that road signs or inventory labels cannot describe fully.
Worked example
Suppose one physical storage-network switch connects two production servers, one production storage port, two test servers, and one test storage port. The administrator assigns the three production connections to VSAN 10 and the three test connections to VSAN 20.
There are now two logical fabrics on the shared switch. Within each fabric, zoning and storage-side access controls still determine the intended access. This configuration does not create more disk space, and it does not make the switch two independent pieces of hardware.
If the switch loses power and all six connections depend on it, both groups can lose connectivity. A design requiring continued access must address physical redundancy and host paths separately. The worked example deliberately concerns Fibre Channel segmentation, not the capacity or protection rules of a software-defined storage product.
Illustrative case study
Fictional case: Storage Orchard receives two proposals labeled VSAN for its analytics environment. One proposes separating laboratory and production storage traffic on existing Fibre Channel switches. The other proposes a new cluster that combines host storage into a shared platform.
The project team initially compares them as competing ways to buy the same capability. It then rewrites its requirements into communication isolation, usable capacity, performance, and recovery objectives. Each proposal is evaluated against the relevant needs, including what happens when shared equipment fails.
The clarification makes the decision understandable to non-specialists. This is an illustrative procurement scenario, not a report of a real deployment or financial saving.
Common misconceptions and mistakes
The biggest mistake is assuming that capitalization alone resolves the meaning. Documents may use inconsistent spelling, so identify the vendor, architecture, and function explicitly.
Another mistake is equating a VSAN with a zone. In Fibre Channel, multiple zones can exist inside a VSAN; the concepts describe different levels of separation.
Virtualization also does not guarantee independent physical failure domains. Shared switches, power supplies, networks, or hosts can affect several logical services. Finally, neither segmentation nor storage replication substitutes for a tested recovery strategy appropriate to the information being protected.
Business use
For a business, the useful question is which operational problem the technology solves. Fabric segmentation can support clearer boundaries and administration. Storage pooling can support shared capacity and policy-driven management. Their costs, skills, dependencies, and failure tests differ.
For AI workloads, evaluate data-access throughput, latency, concurrency, and recovery alongside compute requirements. A model-training job can wait on storage even when processors are available. Specify expected behavior during maintenance and failures, and request evidence from a representative workload rather than inferring performance from the word virtual.
People also ask
Is a VSAN the same as a VLAN?
A Fibre Channel VSAN is analogous to logical network separation, but it belongs to a storage-fabric context with its own services and protocols.
Does creating a VSAN add storage capacity?
Fabric segmentation does not. Storage-pooling products organize available capacity, but usable space depends on hardware and protection policies.
Does VMware vSAN mean a Fibre Channel VSAN?
No. VMware vSAN is a software-defined storage product. Its architecture and configuration should be evaluated using its own documentation.
Check your understanding
Two logical Fibre Channel VSANs share their only physical switch. Are they protected from that switch losing power?
Answer: No. Logical traffic separation does not create independent physical equipment. Continued access requires a redundancy design that addresses the shared failure.
