Skip-gram

Definition

A skip-gram is a sequence of words taken from text while allowing gaps between the selected words. The name also appears in the word2vec skip-gram model, which learns word representations by predicting surrounding words from a target word.

What it means

An ordinary word n-gram contains neighboring words. A skip-gram allows some intervening words to be left out, so it can capture associations that are not immediately adjacent.

The distinction is useful when customers express similar ideas in different ways. The phrases 'delivery was late' and 'delivery was unexpectedly late' share a relationship between delivery and late, even though the words are separated by different amounts of text.

There are two related meanings to recognize. A skip-gram feature is a selected word sequence with allowed gaps. A skip-gram training model is a method for learning numerical word representations from surrounding context. Seeing the name does not establish which one a supplier is using.

Neither meaning implies human understanding. Patterns in word occurrence can help software organize language, but they can also reflect ambiguity, imbalance and unwanted associations in the source text.

How it works

For text features, the designer chooses how many words to select and how much skipping is permitted. The system moves through the text, collects permitted combinations and counts or records them. Allowing more gaps usually creates more possible features.

For the word2vec model, training examples pair a target word with nearby context words. The learning procedure adjusts numerical representations so observed context pairs receive more support than unsuitable alternatives.

Repeated exposure to many contexts gives words with similar usage patterns related representations. The result can be useful for downstream language tasks, although a single representation per word cannot fully distinguish every meaning of that word.

Preprocessing choices matter in either approach. Case, punctuation, spelling and the definition of a word change the input. Evaluation should include the language and writing style of the intended users.

Three practical examples

  • Customer feedback: a team tests gapped word features that connect a product name with a complaint word despite intervening adjectives.
  • Search: an analyst experiments with learned word representations to expand queries with terms used in similar contexts, then reviews irrelevant matches.
  • Document grouping: a business compares simple word-count features with word-representation features when organizing an archive by topic.

Think of it this way

Think of noticing that two colleagues often appear at the same meetings, even when they do not sit next to each other. Their surrounding company provides clues about their roles.

The analogy has limits. Shared company does not prove identical responsibilities. Likewise, words can occur in similar contexts while having opposite meanings. 'Approve' and 'reject' may both appear beside 'application'.

Worked example

Finding a phrase pattern across a small gap

Take the invented sentence 'orders arrive surprisingly late'. Its adjacent two-word sequences are 'orders arrive', 'arrive surprisingly' and 'surprisingly late'.

If we allow up to one skipped word between a selected pair, we also obtain 'orders surprisingly' and 'arrive late'. The adjacent pairs remain permitted because skipping zero words is allowed.

The useful new pair for a delivery analysis may be 'arrive late'. However, 'orders surprisingly' may add little value. Allowing a gap creates possibilities; it does not tell us which features will help.

Now compare 'orders never arrive late'. A careless system that keeps 'arrive late' but loses the effect of 'never' could draw the wrong conclusion. The exercise shows why selected phrases need evaluation in complete sentences, especially where negation changes meaning.

Illustrative case study

A fictional appliance retailer analyses short service comments. A basic adjacent-phrase approach misses complaints when customers insert intensifiers or product details between important words.

The analysts add a limited set of skip-gram features and compare results on comments that were not used to develop the system. Some complaint patterns become easier to identify, but negated statements remain troublesome.

They keep a separate review of those errors and avoid treating one phrase match as sufficient evidence. The case illustrates a modest improvement in representation, not a complete solution to language understanding.

Common misconceptions and mistakes

  • Skip-grams simply delete unimportant words. The allowed gaps are a structural rule; skipped words may carry crucial meaning.
  • A skip-gram feature and the word2vec model are identical. They share a name but describe different objects and uses.
  • Similar word vectors prove synonyms. Similar usage can link opposites, ambiguous words or terms that share a topic.

Business use

The term is useful when reviewing text classification, search or language-analysis proposals. Ask whether it refers to gapped features or a word-embedding training method, and what benefit was demonstrated on your text.

For a small task, simpler features may already work well. A more elaborate representation is justified by measured improvement, not by its technical name.

People also ask

What does the n in n-gram mean?

It is the number of selected items, commonly words or characters.

Can skip-grams cross any distance?

Only if the chosen rule allows it. Larger gaps create more combinations and can weaken the association.

Is word2vec a large language model?

It is a method for learning word representations, rather than a conversational text-generating system.

Check your understanding

Why might 'arrive late' appear in both a complaint and a positive comment, and what should an evaluator check?

Answer: A positive comment might say 'never arrive late'. The evaluator should check complete contexts, especially negation, rather than assume the selected pair determines sentiment.
