Method of types
Definition
The method of types is an information-theoretic technique that groups finite sequences according to their empirical symbol frequencies. Each frequency distribution is a type, and all sequences with that distribution form a type class. Counting these classes and bounding their probabilities connects combinatorics with entropy, relative entropy, compression, hypothesis testing, and large-deviation analysis.
What it means
For a sequence over a finite alphabet, its type records what fraction of positions contain each symbol. It ignores order. Two sequences can therefore have the same type while looking quite different as ordered strings.
This grouping is especially useful for independent, identically distributed observations. Under such a model, every sequence in the same type class has the same probability. Instead of analyzing exponentially many sequences individually, one can analyze a polynomial number of possible types when the alphabet size is fixed. The equal-probability property depends on the source assumptions; it is not generally true for arbitrary dependent data.
How it works
Count each symbol, divide by the sequence length n, and denote the resulting empirical distribution by Q. If the alphabet has m symbols, the number of possible types is the binomial coefficient choosing m−1 from n+m−1. For integer counts nQ(a), the exact type-class size is n! divided by the product of all count factorials.
With base-two logarithms, entropy H(Q) controls the class size on an exponential scale. Under an independent source P, the class probability has exponential factor 2^(−nD(Q||P)), where D is relative entropy. Polynomial factors separate convenient bounds from exact probabilities. For a fixed alphabet, those factors matter at finite n even though they do not change the leading exponential rate as n grows.
Three practical examples
- A coding-theory argument can count strings with a given composition when analyzing how many bits are needed to describe them.
- A hypothesis-testing analysis can bound the probability of an empirical frequency distribution far from a specified source model.
- A data-analysis researcher can study finite-alphabet sampling deviations without assuming a normal approximation is accurate in a rare-event regime.
Think of it this way
Think of sorting bags of letter tiles by their contents before considering the order in which the tiles were laid out. A type identifies the contents, while a type class contains every arrangement with those contents. The analogy stops when order changes probabilities: a source that favors particular transitions needs more information than simple symbol counts.
Worked example
Consider an original six-symbol example over the alphabet {A,B}. A sequence containing four As and two Bs has type Q(A)=2/3 and Q(B)=1/3. The strings AAAABB and ABABAA share this type, although their order differs.
The type class has 6!/(4!2!)=15 sequences. There are only seven possible binary types of length six, corresponding to zero through six As, while there are 2^6=64 ordered binary sequences altogether.
Suppose the source independently produces A with probability 0.7 and B with probability 0.3. Every sequence in this type class has probability 0.7^4×0.3²=0.021609. Multiplying by 15 gives the exact type-class probability 0.324135. Forgetting the multiplicity would confuse the probability of one ordered string with the probability of observing that composition.
The type's entropy is approximately 0.918296 bits. The exponential size factor is 2^(6H(Q))=45.5625, which is not the exact class size 15. A standard bound using the seven possible types gives 45.5625/7≤15≤45.5625. The discrepancy is a useful reminder that entropy-based exponential factors are not exact counts.
The relative entropy D(Q||P) is approximately 0.003741 bits. Thus 2^(−6D(Q||P)) is approximately 0.9846. Dividing by seven gives a lower bound of about 0.1407, while 0.9846 is an upper bound on this type-class probability. The exact value 0.324135 lies between them. These bounds are deliberately broad at this small sample size; the exponential description becomes more informative for suitable large-n comparisons.
Illustrative case study
In a fictional quality-monitoring study, an analyst models each checked item as one of two outcomes and examines the observed composition of a batch. Before using a type-based probability calculation, the team reviews whether items can reasonably be treated as independent with a stable outcome distribution. They keep the exact small-batch calculation alongside the theoretical bound. This is an illustrative statistical exercise, not a validated quality-control rule or a reported manufacturing result.
Common misconceptions and mistakes
A type is not a programming-language data type. It is also not the source distribution itself: it is the empirical distribution of a particular sequence. Several types can occur under the same source, and a single type can occur under many sources.
The expression 2^(−nD) should not be presented as the exact probability of a type class. The finite-length factors matter. Alphabet size also matters: the number of types is polynomial in n only when the alphabet size is fixed. Finally, if Q gives positive frequency to a symbol that P assigns probability zero, the type class has source probability zero and the divergence is infinite.
Business use
For business analytics, the method provides a principled way to reason about categorical sample frequencies and model-based rarity. Its value depends on clear category definitions and a defensible sampling model. Explain whether a report concerns one specific type, a union of types, or a broader event. Summing over several types changes the probability and can require an additional multiplicity factor.
People also ask
Does a type preserve symbol order?
No. It records empirical frequencies only.
Are all strings with the same type equally likely?
Yes under a fixed independent, identically distributed source, but not under every sequence model.
Does a small divergence make the exact probability close to one?
Not necessarily. The type-class multiplicity and finite-sample factors still matter.
Check your understanding
Why is the probability of four As and two Bs 15 times the probability of AAAABB?
Answer: There are 15 distinct ordered sequences with that composition, and all have the same probability under the stated independent source.
